Biyidi Awala Alexander was born in 1932 in Akométam, 60 km from Yaounde, Cameroon. After primary education at the missionary school Mbalmayo, he spends his BA in 1951 in Yaounde and went to France to pursue graduate studies in literature, first at Aix-en-Provence, then at the Sorbonne in Paris .

It was during these years of study he began his career as a writer, starting with the publication of a story, "Without love and without hatred" in the journal Presence Africaine in 1953. The following year, he published under the same pseudonym Eza Boto, cruel City, his first novel. But it was in 1956 that the publication of Poor Christ of Bomba , now known as Mongo Beti, the denition is observed. Subsequently, Mongo Beti leads from front career as a writer and teacher. Among these, Hands Over the Cameroon (1972) was censored in France for four years, under pressure from the government of Cameroon. In 1978 he founded with his wife Odile Tobner (now president of the association Survival ) review Black Peoples, Indigenous African published until 1991.

In 1994, Mongo Beti returned to Cameroon after thirty-two years of exile in France. In Yaounde, he founded the Black Peoples Bookshop. After the publication of three new novels, he died in 2001 in Douala.
